Is Your HMB Supplement Real?
5 ways to ensure your HMB
is safe and high quality
In 2010 a group of researchers from Kingston University in London published a study where they found that HMB didn’t reduce training induced muscle damage - one of it’s reported ways of improving performance.
Thinking it strange that HMB didn’t seem to work in this case, a group of scientists from Iowa State University got hold of the supplement product used in the research: HMB 1000 from Maximuscle, a well known UK supplement brand.
These scientists found that there was exactly 0g of HMB in this product (Read their letter to the journal here)
It turned out that Maximuscle had trademarked the name HMB, which is how they got around the legalities of having to supply a well made, real product to their customers.
Where this may be an isolated case, there are some tell-tale signs that the HMB product you are buying may be fake, or is simply trying to get your attention using questionable marketing or dosing tactics.
5 ways to know if your HMB product
is high quality and safe:
1. READ THE LABEL - LOOK FOR THE HMB LICENSE INFORMATION
Companies making HMB products must buy raw HMB under license from the patent holders, MTI Biotech. MTI places this requirement on supplement companies to ensure that every HMB product available is of the highest quality.
Every licensed HMB product is required to carry either the Metabolic Technologies HMB logo:
Or this statement:
"Nutritional uses of Calcium β-Hydroxy β-Methylbutyrate Monohydrate are licensed to (Insert brand name) on the product label under U.S. Patent #6, 103, 764".
2. CHECK HMB.ORG - IF YOUR BRAND IS LISTED HERE, IT'S LEGIT
On its website, HMB.ORG, MTI provides an extensive list and information on all brands that hold an active HMB license. If you are going to use HMB as a supplement, be sure the brand you take is listed here.
3. CHECK THE PRICE TAG - UNLICENSED BRANDS ARE PRICED A LOT LOWER
As HMB is more difficult to make than other supplement ingredients, it’s also more expensive. If an HMB product’s price BEFORE DISCOUNT is less than other, licensed brands, chances are it’s not a high quality product, and probably a patent infringer.
4. CHECK FOR QUALITY CERTIFICATIONS - HIGH QUALITY BRANDS WILL HAVE THEM
In the USA there aren’t many regulations protecting you from fake, low quality, banned or even harmful products. Make sure the brand of HMB you are considering lists it’s quality assurance certifications and adherences. At a minimum the manufacturer should have GMP registration with a third party auditor like NSF or Informed Choice.
Look for this logo on their website or packaging:
Gold standard would be to hold product certifications and have banned substance testing on every batch made. If it’s from another country like Canada, it should show evidence that it’s licensed for sale in that country and meets all quality guidelines.
5. CHECK THE PACKAGING - HIGH QUALITY BRANDS WILL BE UP FRONT ABOUT DOSAGE AND SUPPLY
Don’t be fooled by misleading packaging and labelling tactics. This is important both for quality and also to make sure you aren’t falling for sneaky supplement sales tricks. Here are some things to look for:
Low dosing to reduce price and cost
HMB dosage should be 3g/d - which is in line with the research published on HMB. A common tactic is to under dose the product to then be able to sell it at a lower price point or reduce the cost of manufacturing. You’ll be taking HMB, but not enough.
This product from Transparent labs provides 2g/d of HMB, which is is not enough to have an impact on performance according to research (Wilson et al 2013), yet this product is selling it as an active dose and is competitively priced.
Same size container but lower price (because there’s less supplement in there... Shhhhhhh)
Another tactic is failing to make it clear how long your HMB supplement will last. If you see two products that look the same, but one is cheaper than the other, it’s a good idea to check how long the product will last at a 3g/d dose. Do your math and figure out if both products contain the same amount of HMB before buying.
Daily dose of HMB: 3g/d
For a 1 month supply you will therefore need ~90g HMB
MSRP should be about US$50 for this amount of HMB - or
90g / US$50 = A price of 1.8g per US$1
Muscle Strength by Advocare contains 20 servings of HMB each with just 2g of HMB. This is just 40g of HMB total, so enough for 15d, yet it’s priced competitively with products with twice the HMB in there. Don’t be fooled.
