Blonyx Research Update: Protein’s Impact on Bone Health, Red Light Therapy, and Sweat Testing

Each week in my Research Update, I distill the latest sports science research into practical insights to help you improve your training, performance, and recovery.

In this week's update:


A Post-Run Protein Shake Won't Protect Your Bones on Its Own

This study tested whether a single dose of whey protein right after a hard run could blunt the bone-stress and inflammation response that follows exercise. Fourteen endurance runners, each training at least 40 kilometers a week, did two trials in random order: one where they drank 0.5g of whey protein per kilogram of bodyweight immediately after running to exhaustion at 70% of their VO2max, and one where they drank water instead. Bone-turnover and inflammation markers rose after the run in both conditions and returned to baseline within 24 hours, with no meaningful difference between the whey protein and water trials for any marker measured.

My thoughts: This is a well-run negative result and it's a good reminder that a single dose of anything, protein included, isn't going to override the acute stress response from a hard run. Bone health is a long game, not a post-run-shake game.

 

An Atheltic Recovery Tool That May Outperform the Others

This study compared four recovery strategies in 12 CrossFit athletes after a hard workout: doing nothing, pneumatic compression boots, shockwave therapy, and red light therapy combined with a magnetic field. None of the four methods made a difference in jump height measured 1 hour after the workout. By 24 and 48 hours, though, red light therapy pulled ahead of the other three, athletes jumped higher, had lower levels of a muscle damage marker called LDH, and showed higher antioxidant enzyme activity. Compression and shockwave therapy didn't outperform simply resting when it came to the numbers.

My thoughts: The 24 to 48 hour numbers are genuinely interesting, but a study this small with only 12 athletes and a device-maker connection for one of the researchers, needs independent replication before I'd call it a real recommendation. Filing this under promising, but I don’t think you need to race out to buy a red light panel just yet.


A Single Sweat Sample Can Predict Your Whole Session

This study tested whether a single sweat sample could reliably predict an athlete's sodium losses across a full training session. Eight highly trained men each completed two 5-hour cycling sessions in the heat, once drinking on a fixed schedule and once drinking to thirst. Their whole-body sweat sodium concentration stayed remarkably stable within and between sessions regardless of which drinking strategy they used, and a single sweat sample taken 40 minutes into the ride predicted their full-session average with strong accuracy.

My thoughts: This is a genuinely practical finding. If one early sweat sample can reliably predict your session average, that removes a lot of guesswork from electrolyte planning. This is a small, male-only sample though, so I'd treat it as directional rather than gospel for every athlete's sweat profile.
